In mid-March, Google announced a blanket ban on cryptocurrencies and ICOs, citing risks to investors. The ban became effective in June. Additionally, Google had implemented a ban on cryptocurrency mining script ban. Today, Google followed it up with a ban on mining apps. The ban is only a portion of a new set of rules provided in the July 2018 update to the tech giant’s Developer Policy Center.

Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, Inc., provided the ban in straight forward language as follows “We don’t allow apps that mine cryptocurrency on devices.”

Google had earlier banned the listing of cryptocurrency mining extensions in its Chrome Web Store. Google’s policy, however, doesn’t ban crypto mining completely. It states “We permit apps that remotely manage the mining of cryptocurrency.” So, it is obvious that apps which facilitate cloud mining will only be allowed to be listed in the Chrome Web Store.

It is a well-known fact that cryptocurreny mining is a resource-intensive process, which requires huge amount of computational power. By implementing a ban on cryptocurrency mining apps, Google probably aims to secure Android phones. The ban would ensure efficient use of Android phones, while avoiding a sharp decline in life time expectancy caused by cryptocurrency mining apps.

Other changes

The policy update also states that all applications which “appeal to children but contain adult themes” will not be allowed in Google Play Store. It seems the decision was taken after the infamous #Elsagate issue on YouTube.

Anything that’s creep with a touch of child pornography will be banned. The policy says “Apps that include content that sexualizes minors are subject to immediate removal from the Store.”

The list of banned content also includes apps that “facilitate the sale of explosives, firearms, ammunition, or certain firearms accessories.”

So, any type of app that explains users how to create firearms or even customize firearms to be more efficient will be subject to an immediate ban. Even apps that applaud violence or self-harm will be banned.
