“.locker” Domain: Bridging Web2 and Web3 for a New Digital Era

Orange Domains, a partnership that integrates onchain utility with domain services from Trust Machines, Tucows, DISH (an EchoStar company), and Hiro Systems, has introduced its first top-level domain (TLD), .locker. This TLD is designed to provide a seamless Web3-connected solution while maintaining traditional web domain functionality, creating new opportunities for global domain owners.

Dual Solution: Web2 and Web3 Integration

The .locker TLD offers a two-part solution by combining a Web2 domain name with a corresponding digital identity. This innovation bridges the gap between Web2 domains and Web3 digital identities, linking them to the same user. It targets users who are both curious about and ready for Web3, providing full domain functionality—including website and email capabilities—alongside a Web3 digital identity. This digital identity can be used for various applications such as decentralized finance, managing crypto assets, and participating in Web3 social networks.

Enhanced Interoperability and Security

Purchasers of .locker domains will benefit from premium TLD features and new Web3 interoperability with Bitcoin, allowing them to trade, hold, and manage digital assets. The .locker solution functions similarly to a non-fungible token (NFT), secured by Bitcoin, enabling users to build websites, send emails, and secure finances, art, contracts, and more from a single platform.

Don Ruiz, General Manager for Orange Domains, who previously launched .blog for Automattic Inc. in 2016, indicated that treating the Web3 digital identity as a domain name and using the Web2 process to map it to users removes the friction for audiences exploring the Bitcoin blockchain ecosystem seamlessly. The domain name community has responded positively to this approach.

Exclusive Initial Launch Phase

The initial launch phase of the .locker domain is exclusive to trademark holders registered in the Trademark Clearing House. This phase will be followed by early access and then general public availability in September. Users can renew their .locker domains and Web3 digital identities at their current registrar of record.

Innovative Leadership in Connectivity

Max Orcutt from the Office of Innovation at EchoStar noted that DISH, an EchoStar company, has been an industry leader in innovation since accepting Bitcoin as payment in 2014. EchoStar continues to explore new connectivity technologies, including a cloud-native Open RAN 5G network and ventures within the DePIN and Web3 connectivity spaces.

A Solution for Various Professionals

The .locker domain caters to a wide range of users, from freelance designers and writers to small businesses. It offers a solution that enhances customer acquisition through secure payments and domain ownership.

Gratitude and Anticipation

Orange Domains expressed gratitude to ICANN for its efficient process and noted that many domain registrars are eager to offer .locker to their users. This enthusiasm underscores the anticipated impact and utility of .locker in the evolving digital landscape.

The introduction of the .locker domain signifies a significant step in integrating Web2 and Web3 technologies, offering users enhanced capabilities and security in managing both traditional and digital assets. This innovative approach is expected to pave the way for broader adoption of blockchain technology and digital identities in everyday internet usage.
