As per June 29 report in the Nikkei newspaper, Soramitsu will start the trial of “White Tiger,” a digital currency hosted on the company’s native blockchain Hyperledger Iroha.
The digital asset will be trialed at cafetarias and stores at the University of Aizu in Fukushima Prefecture, 300 km north of Tokyo, beginning on July 1, before systematically being used at venues off campus.
The launch of White Tiger is one of the initiatives in the broader smart city program unveiled by government officials and private firms in the City of Aizu-Wakamatsu.
Partaking shops will have the opportunity to receive digital payments from the zone’s nearly 120,000 citizens via smartphone apps or recharge cards.
Soramitsu, headquartered in Tokyo, is one of the blockchain firms behind the creation of a central bank digital currency in Cambodia.
