Back in October 2018, IBM inked an agreement with Azerbaijan’s central bank to deploy blockchain in numerous sectors over a period of five years. The tech giant will now work on deploying blockchain in cargo transport sector.
The news was revealed by Safar Mehdiyev, Chairman of Azerbaijan State Customs Committee. Mehdiyev also elaborated on the plans at a press meet that was conducted during the ongoing IT/TI Conference and Exhibition of the World Customs Organization.
Mehdiyev said: “It will be possible to obtain the necessary information from the database online, without outside interference. It will be useful for both entrepreneurs and customs authorities, as it will improve the quality of customs services provided.”
Advantages of blockchain technology in customs processes has been recognized by governments across the world, including the US, which in August 2018 unveiled a trial scheme based on custom built technology. Mehdiyev revealed plans to utilize the system outside its borders, with Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia under consideration presently.
Trend quoted Mehdiyev as saying “In this direction, we are implementing a project with Ukraine with the support of Georgia and Moldova.”
Notably, Justice Ministry of Azerbaijan has also conveyed its interest in blockchain for carrying out its day-to-day proceedings.
