AlgoBharat, the Algorand Foundation’s India initiative, has announced a significant partnership with Lok Swasthya SEWA to develop a Digital Health Passport. This collaboration aims to provide a secure, immutable record of verified credentials, enabling more efficient access to critical health benefits and social safety net programs for users. The partnership, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), outlines a blockchain-based solution designed to meet these objectives.

Enhancing Community Health Services

The implementation of the Digital Health Passport will enable SEWA’s extensive network of community centers, known as SEWA Shakti Kendras (SSKs), to scale and tailor their services to meet the unique needs of each household. Currently, each SSK provides crucial health-related information, manually collects and validates documents to access entitlements, and consolidates individual-level data in spreadsheets for nearly 34,000 households and 200,000 individuals. The new system will minimize manual errors and maintain each woman’s information securely, complying with India’s Personal Identifiable Information regulations. Additionally, the security features of blockchain will ensure that SEWA members retain control over their identities, safeguarding their data from unauthorized access and tampering.

Lok Swasthya SEWA is expected to benefit from a macro view of the demographic details of its growing population, allowing it to effectively target services to informal women workers and their families. This advancement will significantly enhance the organization’s ability to provide tailored health and social protection programs.

Addressing Challenges in Health Coverage

India has made substantial progress toward universal health coverage through initiatives like the Ayushman Bharat program, which includes the Digital Health Mission, the establishment of numerous Health and Wellness Centres, and the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) health insurance program. Despite these advancements, awareness and access to these programs remain challenging for millions in India’s informal labor force. Women in the informal economy face significant barriers in obtaining and safeguarding their documents, which can impede their access to care.

The Digital Health Passport will enable SEWA Shakti Kendras to leverage their strong position within the community to rapidly enroll members into essential health and social protection programs. This will help women stay healthy, continue working, and earn a living.

Leaders’ Insights on the Partnership

Mirai Chatterjee, Director of SEWA Social Security, expressed optimism about the collaboration, emphasizing that it would encourage women workers to take a more active role in their healthcare journey. By providing secure access to their documents, the initiative aims to improve health outcomes and foster a sense of ownership and confidence that can lead to economic empowerment and self-reliance.

Anil Kakani, Vice President and India Country Head at Algorand Foundation, highlighted the challenges faced by India’s large informal workforce in accessing government health programs. He noted that these programs are crucial for helping informal women workers stay healthy and continue working. Kakani stated that it was a privilege for Algorand to partner with Lok Swasthya SEWA in delivering a blockchain solution to enhance healthcare access and outcomes for working women and their families. This collaboration underscores the power of blockchain in creating a more inclusive economy and aligns with the vision of SEWA’s founder, Ela ben Bhatt.

Real-World Blockchain Application

The Digital Health Passport, built on the Algorand blockchain, will ensure the tamper-proof storage and easy retrieval of critical documents and health data. This will empower women to manage their health information effectively, regardless of the healthcare facility they visit. The collaboration between AlgoBharat and Lok Swasthya SEWA showcases a powerful real-world application of blockchain technology, highlighting its potential to revolutionize healthcare access and outcomes.

In summary, the partnership between AlgoBharat and Lok Swasthya SEWA aims to transform healthcare diagnostics and outcomes by leveraging AI and blockchain technology. This innovative approach will not only improve diagnostic precision and efficiency but also ensure data security and foster innovation in the healthcare sector. With the upcoming Initial DEX Offering, ZayaAI is set to expand its reach and impact, driving transformative changes in medical diagnostics and setting new standards for healthcare innovation.
