South China Morning Post to Release NFTs of Historical Moments of its 118-year-Old Archive

The South China Morning Post (SCMP), a long-running Hong Kong tabloid, is developing a collection of NFTs using the latest token benchmark dubbed “ARTIFACT,” which is meant to conserve iconic assets on the blockchain. SCMP provides a project scope statement in their ARTIFACT Litepaper, which really is a predefined metadata format that may be used to retain memorable parts from SCMP’s 118-year-old collection of titles via distributed holding and circulation.

“Blockchain provides tremendous opportunities to unalterably conserve news content that acts as an empirical info of history,” according to Gary Liu, SCMP’s CEO. The ‘ARTIFACT’ initiative offers a “chance to find, acquire, display, trade, and recreate significant events and items from our unified human experience.” The NFTs created by SCMP will be influenced by the media house’ library of photojournalism, visual representations, infographics, and dashboards.

Text, pictures, drawings, and graphics gathered by SCMP for over 100 years reflect journalism’s “first drafts of history.” Although the token format will eventually be blockchain independent, SCMP has picked a handful of blockchains to launch its initiative and explore its potential. It has partnered with the Ethereum-blockchain metaverse The Sandbox, an associate firm of blockchain company Animoca Brands, to aid in recreating its past and reach a wider audience.

The Sandbox will produce a collection of 3D voxel-based interactive play and traditional experiences on the basis of current and historic monuments and treasures in Hong Kong and mainland China in partnership with domestic game companies and graphic artists. The Star Ferry and the Kowloon Walled City will be incorporated into the blockchain-based metaverse. Players will be able to visually experience sights from Hong Kong in the 1950s and understand about the city’s historical complexity via SCMP’s reportage from the period, according to Liu.

On July 22, users will be permitted to acquire plots close to the SCMP venture using the metaverse’s in-house LAND tokens, according to The Sandbox. “Our aim is that over time, we will develop metaverse experiences for players to explore ancient Hong Kong, historical China, and to understand about the beauty and richness of this area of the world,” Liu told the SCMP today. LAND tokens may be gathered and built into simulated properties within The Sandbox’s metaverse by a variety of The Sandbox’s collaborators or users.

Atari, for instance, has made use of such limited digital areas to offer 3D voxelized variants of their famous games. Individual gamers can also purchase LAND to serve as a base for creating and releasing their personal standalone game titles.Following the two blocks of second LAND presales, The Sandbox has achieved over 40 million worldwide mobile installations and raised over 1,300 Ether (ETH). This summer, the metaverse plans to have an Alpha public debut.
