Following the use of blockchain technology in supply chain, finance and gaming in a big way, Carrefour, French retail giant has furthered blockchain development by implementing the technology for tracking milk.
Beginning March, Carrefour has starting taking steps to launch its new product, named Carrefour Quality Line (CQL) micro-filtered full-fat milk, whose supply chain is tracked using a blockchain based system. CQL is claimed to provide total product traceability throughout the supply chain, starting with farmers till the shelves of retailers.
This is not the first time Carrefour, a world’s major food retailer, is implementing blockchain in its products. In November 2018 Carrefour launched Hyperledger’s food tracking solution to track chickens marked with the name “Calidad y Origen” in Spain.
CQL enables consumers to know the GPS coordinates of farmers whose animals were milked. Furthermore, CQL enables gathering data related to the time of collection and packaging, in addition to information related to various shareholders who are part of the product line.
The retail giant had formerly joined Food Trust, which is IBM’s blockchain-based food tracking network, along the steps of major food manufacturers like Nestle, Dole Food, Golden State Foods, etc.
In the final leg of 2018, after completing an 18-month trial of the TE-FOOD blockchain software in Vietnam, French retail group Auchan expanded TE-FOOD’s FoodChain blockchain solution to five more nations. The blockchain software, which permits retail monitoring of predetermined range of products, is available in France, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Senegal.
